Sophomore Consultation Program

violinistThis comprehensive program ideally begins in the summer before the student enters sophomore year in high school.

The purpose of the sophomore program is to evaluate the student’s strengths, identify opportunities for sophomore year, track the student’s progress and achievements, and look forward to junior year goals and expectations.

The Sophomore Consultation Program kicks off with a First Assessment Consultation:

This two-hour meeting begins with a comprehensive review of both the student’s and parent’s completed questionnaires. In this meeting, your advisor works with you to map out your family’s goals, values and priorities, and offers suggestions for next steps in the college application preparation process. Both parent and child must participate in this meeting.

After the First Assessment Consultation, issues critical to sophomore year will be thoroughly vetted with your CAN advisor. These issues include but are not limited to:

  • Defining academic course selection for sophomore year
  • Discussions of GPA, suggestions for improvements, if needed
  • Preparing for and taking the PSAT, if necessary
  • Defining a student’s passions
  • Evaluation of extracurricular activities
  • Evaluation of community service activities
  • Early guidance on visiting colleges
  • Early guidance on managing testing
  • Early guidance on college selections

The final meeting of the Sophomore Consultation Program is a two-hour follow-up session with both student and parent(s), which addresses questions, provide additional support and strategize further.  This can be a face-to-face session, or two separate phone consultations.
