The Junior/Senior Consultation Program is a fully comprehensive program beginning in the summer before the student’s entrance into junior year.
The purpose of the junior/senior program is to provide a seamless consultation service to students and their families, from the very beginning of junior year to the graduation from high school, dealing with all aspects of and strategies for applying, and gaining admission to one or more of a student’s top choice colleges.
Unlike one-year programs, the Junior/Senior Program continues to the end of the student’s senior year, and includes consultations on college acceptance results, including strategies if the student is deferred, wait-listed or rejected, discussions on negotiating financial aid, and consultations on final college decisions.
Junior Program
In the Junior Program, your CAN counselor will evaluate and track the student’s progress and achievements in the first two years, to define junior year expectations, and set goals for junior year.
The Junior/Senior Consultation Program kicks off with a First Assessment Consultation:
This two-hour meeting begins with a comprehensive review of both the student’s and parent’s completed questionnaires. In this meeting, your advisor works with you to map out your family’s goals, values and priorities, and offers suggestions for next steps in the college application preparation process. Both parent and student must participate in this meeting.
As part of the Junior/Senior Consultation Program, another two-hour Assessment Consultation will take place at the beginning of Senior Year, and both parent and student must participate in this meeting as well.
After the First Assessment Consultation, issues critical to junior year will be thoroughly vetted with your CAN advisor. These issues include but are not limited to:
- Course selection guidance for junior year
- Strategy for letters of recommendation
- Evaluation of re-taking PSAT
- Managing test taking – SATs, SAT 2s, APs, ACTs, etc.
- Preparing for college visits
- Improvement of GPA, if needed
- Evaluation of extracurricular and service activities
- Early discussions on essays for applications
- Summer activities and how they will contribute to your college applications – internships, service, work, etc.
- Early discussion of common app, schools not on common app, etc.
It may be necessary for the student to get additional assistance in essay writing and test taking preparation. The College Advisory Network can provide expert tutoring and essay writing services on an a la carte basis. This will be discussed in meetings with both parents and student.
The final meeting in junior year is a two-hour follow-up session with both student and parent(s), which addresses questions, provide additional support and strategize further. This can be a face-to-face session, or two separate phone consultations.
Senior Consultation Program
The purpose of the senior program (within the Junior/Senior Program) is to evaluate and track the student’s progress and achievements in the first three years, consultation on completing applications, essay guidance, and meeting application deadlines.
The Senior Consultation Program kicks off with a second Assessment Consultation:
In this two-hour meeting, your advisor recaps what has been accomplished in junior year, and if any goals or values and priorities have changed in the past year. He/She will offer suggestions for the college application preparation process. Both parent and student must participate in this meeting. There is also an initial discussion of Financial Aid needs.
After this Assessment Consultation, issues critical to senior year will be thoroughly vetted with your CAN advisor. These issues include but are not limited to:
- Review and evaluation of summer activities and their contributions to your application
- Strategies and timelines for obtaining letters of recommendation
- Managing test taking – SATs, SAT 2s, APs, ACTs – schedules, deadlines for registration, etc.
- Preparing for college interviews
- Discussion of GPA and standardized test scores and dealing with problems that may exist
- Review and finalizing essays for applications
- Early discussion of common app, schools not on common app, etc.
It is possible that the student may need additional assistance in essay writing and test taking preparation. The College Advisory Network can provide expert tutoring and essay writing services on an a la carte basis. This will be discussed in meetings with both parents and student.
The Senior Consultation Program also includes a two-hour follow-up session with both student and parent(s), which addresses questions, provide additional support and strategize further. This can be a face-to-face session, or two separate phone consultations.
(Additional phone consultations are available for an additional fee.)
Final Meetings – Junior/Senior Consultation Program
Two final meetings are included in the Junior/Senior Consultation Program, which will focus on assistance if the student is deferred, wait-listed or rejected from any college, discussions about financial aid negotiations, strategies for attending “accepted students” events at colleges, and assistance in final college selection.
These meetings will also focus on any academic problems or other problems that may have arisen since the student sent his/her final applications to colleges, and strategize for handling them.
The Junior/Senior Consultation Program extends from the student’s entrance into junior year until graduation.
