This comprehensive program ideally begins in the summer before the student enters junior year in high school.
The purpose of the junior program is to evaluate and track the student’s progress and achievements in the first two years, to define junior year expectations, and to set goals for junior year.
The Junior Consultation Program kicks off with a First Assessment Consultation:
This two-hour meeting begins with a comprehensive review of both the student’s and parent’s completed questionnaires. In this meeting, your advisor works with you to map out your family’s goals, values and priorities, and offers suggestions for next steps in the college application preparation process. Both parent and student must participate in this meeting.
After the First Assessment Consultation, issues critical to junior year will be thoroughly vetted with your CAN advisor. These issues include but are not limited to:
- Course selection guidance for junior year
- Strategy for letters of recommendation
- Evaluation of re-taking PSAT
- Managing test taking – SATs, SAT 2s, APs, ACTs, etc.
- Preparing for college visits
- Improvement of GPA, if needed
- Evaluation of extracurricular and service activities
- Early discussions on essays for applications
- Summer activities and how they will contribute to your college applications – internships, service, work, etc.
- Early discussion of common app, schools not on common app, etc.
It may be necessary for the student to get additional assistance in essay writing and test taking preparation. The College Advisory Network can provide expert tutoring and essay writing services on an a la carte basis. This will be discussed in meetings with both parents and student.
The final meeting of the Junior Consultation Program is a two-hour follow-up session with both student and parent(s), which addresses questions, provide additional support and strategize further. This can be a face-to-face session, or two separate phone consultations.
